Lagavulin Distillers Edition 2018

Lagavulin Distillers Edition 2018

Distilled in 2002, bottled in 2018. This means it is 16 years old and this was an opportunity to set  the Lagaulin Distillers edition head to head against the Lagavulin 16yo.
Every year Lagavulin releases a distillers edition whisky and this one is bottled at 43% ABV. It’s an Islay whisky that is known for being heavily peated.

The nose on Distillers edition is of Oak, caramel, resin, pleasant smoky aroma, anise/ licorice, the BBQ, orange, apricot. Compared to the Lagavulin 16 that has more smoke and not so much of the sweet flavours as the Distillers edition.

The tasting notes on the Distillers edition has a good smoke with a long finish and you get hints of the licorice that i found on the nosing.
The Lagavulin 16 has a more prickly and have a smoother taste with distinct wood notes.

Even if they are both smoky, from the same distillery and has the same age statement they are two very different whisky’s.

Ratings of the Lagavulin Distillers edition 2018:  7/10
Ratings of the Lagavulin 16: 7.5/10

Both are two good whisky’s but I still prefer the original Lagavulin 16yo.

Ardbeg Traigh Bhan 19 YO

A new Ardbeg whisky is going to be released 2019-09-19 at systembolaget(ArticleNr: 40577) here in sweden. It will be listed for 1799:- and
is going to be included in the core family with the others like An oa, Uigeadail , corryvreckan…
Traigh Bhan is pronounced ‘Tri-Van’ and the plan is to make up a batch of Traigh Bhan each year which will be available in limited quantities.

This will be alot more expensive compared to the others but a review on this one in the future will determine if its worth its price.

Talisker Dark Storm VS Talisker Storm

Last weekend me and my friend Robert tried and compared Talisker dark storm and Talisker Storm.
At first you think that they should be quite alike but that is not the case.

The nose on Talisker storm:

  • Seaspray
  • Salty
  • Soft toffie
  • Smoke

The nose on Talisker dark storm:

  • Dull
  • Pungent
  • Plum

Tase of Talisker storm:

  • A good punch of smoke
  • Salty
  • Smooth

Taste of Talisker Dark storm:

  • Spicy
  • Long finish
  • More of a powerfull sharp taste

Summary of this is that its two completely different drams and the winner of these two is the original Talisker storm.
It’s has a better smoke and is more pleasant on the nose, the taste is more complex and i like the saltyness.

Whitley Neill Gin

Gin is quite new to me, I’ve tried the standards like Bombay Sapphire and Hendrick’s gin and that is about it.
I wanted to explore and see if there was other flavours to explore and i found this Whitley Neill gin on systembolaget.

I made an special order of it because it was not in store stock as standard but was availiable to order.
I was blown away with the new experience of flavoured gin. This one is rhubarb and ginger gin and i tried it with the tonic that has rhubarb flavour.
Later on I went to a popular gin bar to try some other flavours and tried the Quince Gin flavoured one which i liked too.

I will definitely try the other Whitley Neill flavours and there are a bunch:

  • Aloe and cucumber
  • Blackberry
  • Blood orange
  • Lemongrass and ginger
  • Parma violet
  • Pink grapefruit
  • Prote and hibiscus
  • Quince
  • Raspberry
  • Rhubarb and ginger
  • The Original

I can highly recommend you trying flavoured gin like the one i tried.
